Through I 1 years, fertilization at planting significantly increased the stemwood volume (outside bark) per loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) on a n intensively prepared moderately zuell-dmined fine sandy loam site i n northern Louisiana. Four years of herbaceou~r plant control significantly increased pine survival, and because herbaceous plant control increased s u n ~ i v a l , it resulted in a significant increase in total stand volume. Woody plant control no longer produced significant res u l t ~ by age I I . South. J . Appl. For. 14(4):173-177.

Pine Straw Harvesting , Fire , and Fertilization Affect Understory Vegetation within a Louisiana Longleaf

Pine straw harvesting con provide on economic benefit to landowners, but the practice may also change the composition of plant communities. This research was initiated in o 34-yeor-old stand of longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.} established in 1956 to study how pine straw management practices (fertilization, prescribed fire, and straw harvesting) affected plant communities, and herein, effec...

Effects of overstory retention, herbicides, and fertilization on sub-canopy vegetation structure and functional group composition in loblolly pine forests restored to longleaf pine

The desirable structure of longleaf pine forests, which generally includes a relatively open canopy of pines, very few woody stems in the mid-story, and a well-developed, herbaceous ground layer, provides critical habitat for flora and fauna and contributes to ecosystem function. Current efforts to restore longleaf pine to upland sites dominated by second-growth loblolly pine require informatio...

Specific gravity responses of slash and loblolly pine following mid-rotation fertilization

Wood quality attributes were examined in six stands of slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm. var. elliottii) and loblolly pine (P. taeda L.) in the lower Coastal Plain of Georgia and Florida. Several plots comprised each stand, and each plot was divided so that it received three fertilizer treatments: a control treatment with herbaceous weed control at planting and brush control at mid-rotation o...

Young Modeling for I lntensi Loblolly Pine Plantations in Southeastern U S

Intensively managed loblolly pine stands are often subjected to a variety of silvicultural treatments at t ime of planting or shortly thereafter. However, most loblolly pine growth-and-yield models predict growth after crown closure has occurred. In this article, we describe the development and implementation of a system of equations designed to simulate growth of loblolly pine before the onset...
